music monday: The Killers

After a week off, I have picked a classic song to feature in today’s returning music monday post. The song in question is from 2006 and is it just me or does talking about things you clearly remember as being 10 years old make you feel ancient?! Although 23 isn’t that old in the grand scheme of things, I feel like I’ve been experiencing this more often recently and once the nostalgia has worn off I’m left feeling like a bit of a grandma. Another example of this was the The Hills turning 10 last month, a show that one of my best friends and I watched religiously and discussed in our physics lessons.

Coming off that mini tangent and back to the actual focus of this post, the song I’ve chosen for today is Read My Mind by The Killers. I started watching Friday Night Lights on Netflix last month (don’t worry I’m already obsessed with it) and during one of the scenes in the Season 1 finale Read My Mind played in the background. As it did I found that I just naturally started singing along and it turns out that I still know all of the words – even 10 years later. Since watching that episode I’ve been regularly pressing play on this song whenever I’m on my laptop, whether I’m working or just browsing online. I have always been a fan of The Killers and I think most of their music still holds up really well now. I’m not sure what exactly is going on with them now or if Brandon Flowers is currently in solo mode, but I’m enjoying re-discovering their early albums in my iTunes library.

I picked Read My Mind, from the album Sam’s Town, because it was the song featured on FNL and the one which inspired this post but I also think it would work as a good introduction to their music and distinct sound. It’s got their signature rock feel, great lyrics and is just so easy to listen to. On a final note, I couldn’t write about The Killers without giving a little mention to Mr Brightside because I don’t think I have ever come across anyone who doesn’t know every single lyric.
